A toxin is a substance that is harmful or noxious to your body or mind. External toxins are found outside of your body/mind. Internal toxins are found inside of your body/mind. Toxins often act as obstacles to cure in the treatment of people with diseases; toxins create diseases themselves; and at the very least, toxins aggravate existing health problems.

After reading the latest statistics from both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Environment Canada where billions, upon billions of pounds of noxious and harmful toxins are released into our air, water sources, ground and food, it isn't a far stretch to understand how these toxins can lead to: poor health, headaches, obesity, arthritic pain, fatigue, chronic infections, cancer, autoimmune disease, neurological disease, mood disorders, behaviour challenges (hyperactivity, autism, etc.), bowel disease, immune disease, cardiovascular disease and reproductive problems including infertility.
Staying healthy involves the awareness of toxins, the avoidance of toxins, the elimination of toxins, and the nutritional repair to the cellular damage created by these toxins in your body. There are many toxins you can indeed avoid. Become knowledgeable and choose wisely. There are toxins that you are not able to avoid, and therefore detoxification programs are of paramount importance in this day and age where ingesting toxins from your food and water, inhaling toxins from the air, and absorbing toxins through your skin are a daily occurrence. To become and remain healthy, eliminating and excreting the presence of these illness-producing substances from your body/mind is not only useful, but also vital for experiencing wonderful health. Performing a regular detoxification program in order to maintain great overall health is like daily brushing and flossing your teeth in order to maintain great dental health.
The main players in your body for ridding yourself of these toxins are those organs that eliminate waste products: the bowels, the liver, the kidneys, the lymphatic circulation, the skin and the lungs. Fantastic health involves keeping these organs and systems well tuned. Detoxification programs emphasize and assist these organs of elimination to excrete wastes effectively and efficiently.
Effectively Managing Stress
In my clinical experience, I have witnessed many people deal effectively with stress and challenging life situations much more easily when they maintain a regular detoxification program for themselves. However, during times of acute stress and extreme challenge, I always say to wait and do a detox program after the most intense part of the stress is over. This is because detoxification often uses up energy and there is already lots of energy consumption taking place during times of high stress and high challenge for most people. Having said that, an increase in energy and vitality is frequently noticed after having done a detox program.
