Effectively Managing Stress using Water, Air, Sunlight.

Water Quantity
The best information I have come across regarding the physiological importance for drinking plenty of water can be found in the book Your Body's Many Cries For Water" by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj M.D. Check out Water Cure.

Most people are cellularly dehydrated and do not drink enough water. This lack of water aggravates or causes the following problems: fatigue, anxiety, irritability, depression, cramps, headaches, heartburn, joint pain, back pain, constipation, colitis, angina, asthma, allergies, high blood pressure, cystitis and kidney stones. I have seen all of these symptoms improve in patients with their own persistent, continuous and adequate daily intake of water.

After all, two-thirds of our bodies are made up of water.

How much to drink? I recommend to all my adult patients to drink no less than 10 glasses (eight oz. glasses) of water daily. (For those adults who weigh less than 110 lbs., 8 glasses is fine). This number does not include coffee, tea, pop, milk or juice as these fluids either dehydrate the body or do not offer the hydrating effect that pure water does. Drink between 10 to 16 glasses of water daily depending on the climate, temperature, humidity, altitude, your exercise level, your mental activity, your stress level, any presence of illness, or your body size.

Many patients gasp when I encourage them to drink this volume of water. This is because they cannot imagine "how to get it all in". I suggest slowly working up to this volume. Yes, initially, the bladder will be working overtime and more frequent trips to the bathroom will be necessary. I tell my patients: "It's like exercising a muscle. It may take many months before you are properly cellularly hydrated and in the mean time your bladder will become much stronger and your body much more healthy. Urinating approximately every 2 - 3 hours during waking hours is healthy and normal and in fact, is actually vital for removing internal toxins."

I recommend finishing up water intake by 6 or 7 p.m. so that sleep is restful and does not include nightly trips to the bathroom.

You may wish to carry around a water bottle if you don't have easy access to water at all times. Drinking plenty of water is the cheapest and easiest way to experience fantastic health. In this day and age of increased exposure to environmental toxicity, we absolutely require water not only to maintain life, but also to flush out the toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis so that we may age with vibrancy.

For those with severe kidney disease or severe disease where excessive body fluid is retained, the fluid volume I am recommending is inappropriate and seeking the advice of a healthcare practitioner would be wise.

Water Quality
Water quality with our increasingly polluted planet becomes of paramount importance when considering your health. If you are to be drinking this much water, be sure that it is pure and does not contain contaminants like chemicals, heavy metals, chlorine, industrial pollutants, gasoline emissions, parasites, cysts, pesticides or pharmaceutical drugs.

I strongly recommend purchasing a water purification unit for your home to improve your water quality. Relying on your community water system (tap water) for healthy water is in my opinion, based on a severe lack of information and health education. Not drinking purified water is like driving a car without insurance. Buying a water purifier or hauling purified water to your home is an important investment in your health. I have owned eight different types of water purification units over 20 years and have investigated many more. Do your own research. There are pros and cons to every unit. I've done my research, and in my opinion, the best system for the cost is the Sun Pure unit. Unfortunately, these are no longer being manufactured and only the replacement kits can be obtained for those who already own this type of water purifier.

However, the water I drink in my office is filtered by a Crystal Quest water filtration unit. This unit comes the closest to what we believe is the best filtration unit available.

Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy means therapy with water. This type of therapy could very well be included in the NATURAL THERAPIES section. Constitutional Hydrotherapy is very useful for many chronic conditions and diseases. To do this at home with the help of another person I refer you to pg. 296-298 of "Clinical Purification: A Complete Treatment and Reference Manual" by Dr. Gina Nick, N.D.

For great general health and for the boosting of your immune system, I recommend alternating hot and cold showers. After you take your daily shower, let the water run down your back as hot as you can tolerate it (don't burn yourself). Count to 60. Then turn the shower knob toward cold and find a temperature that you can tolerate for a count of 30. If you are counting quickly, then you have the water set too cold for your level of tolerance as counting is best done at a steady comfortable pace. Turn the shower knob back toward hot for a count of 60, then cold again for 30. Do this for a total of 3 or 4 cycles. End with a cold shower and rub yourself vigorously with a towel after you are finished. Dress immediately and don't let yourself chill. Initially, you will not be able to tolerate very hot temperatures and will only be able to tolerate cool (not cold) water. Eventually your tolerance will increase and you will be able to tolerate both extremes quite well and experience extraordinary invigorating aliveness and health. (Make sure you use a KDF shower filter to eliminate toxic chlorine and improve your water quality).

Air
Excellent air quality is absolutely vital to health, wellness and the prevention of illness. Many respiratory illnesses are created by poor air quality from both indoor and outdoor air. Indoor and outdoor pollution remain huge issues. What is in our control? Use an air purifier to address indoor pollutants, and go for a walk in a forest or up a mountain to address outdoor pollution. I want to take the opportunity here to express my gratitude to those people who have committed their time and energy in helping create healthier air quality and less air pollution in our world so that our future generations and we may breathe more easily. Clearly, there is more work to be done regarding air quality and our planet.

Most people breathe shallow from their chest, which contributes to physical and emotional problems. Becoming conscious of how you breathe and slowing down your breathing astronomically improves your health. There are many different breathing techniques explained in books, videos, websites, classes, etc. that can be helpful for those who may wish detailed information and instruction on this subject. Basically, I believe it is very simple. At birth we instinctively knew how to breathe in a healthy way and it just takes practice to recall this healthy way of breathing. Place your hands on your belly and as you take a slow deep breath in, breathe deep into your belly as you watch your hands move outwards. After you have taken a breath in, breathe out slowly and effortlessly. This is called diaphragmatic breathing and it promotes great health.

Sun
We have become a culture fearful of sunlight, where we lather up every inch of our bodies with chemically laden sunscreen and wear sunhats in fear of getting skin cancer. Let's give ourselves a huge break. Sun is vital to life. It nourishes us and promotes great health and longevity. I am not advocating overexposure to the sun where skin damage occurs because this is not healthy nor useful. I am absolutely advocating at least 30 minutes (or more) of daily sunlight on exposed skin without sunscreen to receive the huge benefits that UV rays offer. One huge benefit we get from the sun is obtaining a natural source of Vitamin D without overdosing on this vitamin. Vitamin D is very important in preventing osteoporosis, chronic muscle and joint pain, depression, high blood pressure, prostate cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. I recommend that you to check out Vitamin D Council and SUNARC .

The sun also stimulates the happy hormone in our brains called serotonin. That is why 90% of my patients say how much better they feel, both physically and emotionally on a sunny day and 60% of these people find the long winters of northern latitude locations challenging. The life-giving rays of the sun promote general health and well-being.

Effectively Managing Stress
In my clinical experience, I have witnessed many people effectively deal with stress and life challenging situations utilizing the category of Water, Air, Sunlight

The top three ways that I have seen are as follows:

1. Drinking no less than 10 glasses (eight oz.) of water daily
2. Slow diaphragmatic breathing for 10-15 minutes daily.
3. Getting in the sun.

The healthiest people that I have ever seen incorporate the above stress managing activities into their daily life effortlessly.
